Norumbega
Built in 1886 and perched high on Route One overlooking Penobscot Bay, this historic castle was converted from a private residence to a bed & breakfast in 1984. When new ownership acquired this unique property in early 2013, they could not help but notice the general disrepair of the building’s deteriorating ocean-side exterior. The original covered porches and elaborate curvilinear balconies had been lost in various renovations over the past thirty years. Partially inspired by a 19th-century photograph of the Norumbega, Phi designed a new enclosed stairwell, upper-floor balconies and ground-level deck that, along with several additional exterior improvements, returned the Inn to its Gilded Age heyday.
